What happens if you don’t change your HVAC air filter regularly?
Do you ever wonder when the last time was you changed your air filter, or why it has to be done in the first place? The air filter is essential in the health of your home and not changing it every 30 days for families with multiple pets and/or allergies, as recommended, can cause issues with your HVAC system and in your home. For suburban homes with no pets or allergies the recommendation is every 60-90 days.
So, what can happen if you don’t change your air filter regularly?
Dust Build-up – When you neglect to change your air filter regularly, the air in your home begins to build up with dust and dirt because the air filter gets clogged. When a filter gets clogged it restricts airflow in and out of your HVAC unit, which causes erosion of the delicate parts of the HVAC and then they will need to get repaired or replaced, which can be very costly.
Disruption in the Heat Exchanger – The heat exchanger is the part of your HVAC that warms your home during the winter months. If your air filter is clogged from dust and dirt buildup, then your HVAC can’t properly heat your home.
Lower Air Quality – A clogged air filter restricts airflow throughout your home. It not only has a difficult time circulating the air, but the air quality will be contaminated with dust and dirt, which increases allergens in the air you breathe.
Increase in Energy Bill – When your air filter is clogged, your HVAC unit has to work extra hard to cycle air throughout your home. You will notice that your HVAC is running longer and more frequently to achieve the desired temperature you have set, which will increase your energy bill.
